What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fats that play structural and signaling roles throughout the body. They are classified as essential fatty acids, meaning the body cannot produce them in sufficient quantities on its own. You have to get them through food or supplementation.
There are three forms relevant to human health:

- ALA (alpha-linolenic acid): A plant-based omega-3 found in flaxseed and walnuts. The body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA, but the conversion rate is extremely poor, typically less than 10% for EPA and far less for DHA. ALA alone is not a reliable source.
EPA and DHA from fish or marine sources are what the research is built on. ALA supplements are not a meaningful substitute.
